This could have been a complete catastrophe. A section of dance floor at Enmore theatre in Sydney collapses under the weight of dozens of people dancing. The carpet spanning across the hole appears to have kept everyone from falling through to the 4 m (12 ft) void beneath. No injuries recorded.

The building dates to 1908 and is a well-known music venue in Sydney.

The videos show people walking above where the collapse occurred, seemingly supported only by the carpet.

Obviously the carpet wasn't actually holding anything up since the floor sagged and didn't actually collapse.

It's impressive the floor can be flexed that much and no-one believes there is any residual damage that is of concern. Just jack it back up and stick new supports under it.

To coin a bit of standard Aussie slang " she'll be right, no wocking furries"

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)

I think under the floor is ground. And the rain caused part of the ground to sink. The foundation is probably just for the structure of the building and nothing significant is under the floor. Literally dirt with a layer of flooring.

I think not.

There is a picture in a link above showing a guy carrying in support poles that look about 6 feet long. That implies the floor is/was 6' above the "ground".

There does not seem to be much local interest in why the collapse happened, or what was done to fix it and preclude a repeat.
