Hi Fellow Engineers!
I need to get registered in Florida for some upcoming work. From what I can tell of their statutes and administrative codes, there are no additional requirements for structural engineering in Florida. Can anyone tell me if that is the case? I’m getting mixed comments about what requirements there might be for Florida practicing structural engineering.

Thanks!

I know you must have an ABET accredited degree to get registered in Florida (which is the reason it is one of the States that I can't get registered in).

ahunt, several years back, I was checking into registration in FL. As best I remember, they had some odd requirements on corporate licensing- seems like a principal of the firm (and not just an employee) had to be licensed to get the corporate license. If you are an individual on your own, or if you are the one of the principals, then no problem.

Looking at the fbpe.org website, it looks like if you're licensed in another state you can get the Florida license. Florida has their own building code. You may have to take a certain number of hours of training on their code. Looks like they also have a 1 year temporary license that you can get if you're licensed in another state.

I've gone through the reciprocity process and found it very grueling. You have to verify all previous employment, provide school transcripts, have professional references, and complete a take home exam. I told myself I'm only doing this once incase I need to register in another state so I got a record through NCEES. This didn't change any of the requirements listed above but at least I know it’s a one time deal. Good luck.

Thank you guys for all the great information!

A.
