Hello,

Our client specification calls for hydrotesting with water containing “client approved type/concentration of wetting agent” and fluorescent dye.

As per my understanding, fluorescent dye is used to enhance the sensitivity of test as we utilize it in Dye penetrant examination(surface NDE). Please let me know if I am wrong.
We requested our sub-contractor to use the fluorescent dye as per client requirements; but they said it is a laborious process as it requires thorough post cleaning activity and instead, they will utilize digital transducers. Can we accept this alternative? Any other alternatives to enhance the test sensitivity instead of using dye penetrant.

Also, please advise me of objective of using wetting agent during hydro test (just for my reference, I want to know). What are the few examples for wetting agents being used in industry for hydro test purpose?
Thanks in advance.

The acceptability of the proposed alternative procedure is at your client's discretion. I doubt the use of digital pressure transducers will be considered an acceptable alternative to the dye. I believe that the purpose of the dye test is to drive the dye into any surface cracks that may open during the hydro test. They may not approve the substitution of regular hydro with post test NDE due to concerns about long drying times/interference of residual water in cracks causing issues with dye penetrant exam; but, you may get a better explanation of their rationale if you ask.

Thanks SPD. The required hydro test will be done on Wellhead equipment and Gate valves. The wetting agent and dye are generally mixed with testing medium (water) and as per Client's information, the objective is to enhance the sensitivity of test.
