Hello everyone,

I want to confirm an information about the hight of the foam dam.

We disagreed with a contractor about the interpretation of the following statement in the designe criteria:

'' Dam height shall be at least 2 in. (51 mm) higher than any burnout panels in metal secondary seals''

are the bunrout panels the secondary seals wipers (rubber tips) or the fusable elements in the secondary seals?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You really need to add a diagram here to show what it is you're talking about.

I don't really know what you mean by "burnout panels". Please explain.

Basically the foam dam needs to be min 50mm higher than anything else.

Hello everyone
I wondering that is it necessary to build the foam dam in the internal floating roof tank.
I check NFPA 11, and it seems to not describe directly.

Internal roof??

How would you get the foam in??

I don't think this is a valid requirement. A fire in an IFR tank is no different to a normal tank.

NFPA 11 Section 5.4 deals with internal floating roofs. Some types of internal floaters (i.e. steel pontoon) can use a foam dam and a rim-fire only foam system. Other types of internal floaters require full-surface foam systems, and thus a foam dam would be wasted money.

thank you for you response.

here is the photo of the secondary seals. what we understood from the NFPA and API 650 mention of ''Burnout panels'' is those added black panels in the secodary seal that woul burn in case of fire, but we are not sur about it

Thank for your response
With foam chamber and deflection plate connecting to shell inside, and let the foam flow through the shell by gravity to the seal area..

I will check the 5.4 and yes, the tank is pontoon

It's such a small amount of additional foam, I'd keep the foam dam above the secondary seal and if the burnout panels actually worked it would be a bonus. After all, we are trying to protect a massive capital investment, the environment and the public from a terrible disaster.
