Yes, I saw that earlier. The artist, whom I understand is unknown, has a reputation for the unexpected. When I told my son about this, he showed me a Banksy painting he has (a reproduction of course). He does some odd stuff.

Pretty funny prank to get his name back into the media. Clever. If it stayed at the halfway point like it appears to have it would still be worth the money to buyer, possibly even appreciating in the few moments after its shredding as it's something new in the Banksy world.

Price is often different from value, but you could be right.

This aetist is not unknown or anonymous either. One can't travel around the world being anonymous. In fact, he is quite famous.

So we structural engineers can become famous by having our structures suddenly collapse after the last bolt is tightened?

As long as we can remain anonymous, right?

I think that would more likely make the structural engineer infamous. Just as Banksy is considered infamous to some, famous to others.

"So we structural engineers can become famous by having our structures suddenly collapse after the last bolt is tightened? "
Or infamous as is the group in Florida.
Wouldn't want to be Denney.

JAE - This one comes pretty close....
At least no one got injured on this one.

I had my doubts about this as soon as I saw the video.

A self destruct enabled 12 years ago?
NO external power supply?
Only half the painting got destroyed.???
Signal reception waiting for 12 years?
No one coming out as seller or buyer.

All highly suspicious.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

Here's a question... I'm sure it will never be answered, but what if the buyer got PO'd that it was shredded? It would be a trivial technical matter to figure out if the shredder was remotely activated or not. Isn't that grounds for a suit? Or even some sort of criminal prosecution? How much more pre-meditated can you get with a crime? Once the gavel dropped, the painting was no longer his to destroy. Just because an artist created something doesn't mean he retains the right to come in your house and scribble all over it later. Pushing the button wasn't art, it was criminal destruction of property. I'm the furthest thing from a lawyer, but would it make a difference if it had a timer built-in such that it was purchased as-is?

Banksy doesn't respect other people's property. He is a vandal and anarchist.

I guess that's one of the reasons that question is nagging... It is annoying to me that this criminal ends up being celebrated as an "artist", and instead of being criminally prosecuted for destroying someone else's property, this extreme act of sabotage and vandalism just makes him even more famous and celebrated in the fart-sniffing art world. Once the art snobs have blessed you, you can do no wrong.

The buyer had the option of backing out since the condition changed.
Banksy would gladly screw a auction house.

The way I see it is this. The Stunt made it his most famous art piece of them all. That makes it the most valuable, especially since it barely damaged it since it specifically stopped part way thru the shredder. If the new buyer was offended or wanted his money back or in this case, at this time, needs only to NOT proceed with the sale, the auction house would not have any problem with that. They can always re-auction it at a substantial increase.

As for Little's points:
A self destruct enabled 12 years ago?
Not self destruct - commanded destruct.

NO external power supply?
None needed as there are lots of batteries that are designed to last decades.

Only half the painting got destroyed.???
Certainly! Designed that way so the art piece remains completely...intact? And, valuable.

Signal reception waiting for 12 years?
See batteries above, but since people were allowed around the art prior to bidding there could've been a hidden power switch or not. You could run a simple receiver for decades with a primary lithium battery.

No one coming out as seller or buyer.
A very normal situation which is why half the bidders were people with phones in their hands. The buyer would want to also understand the new situation before any possible exposure.
