Full Bore vs Full Port

Can any one help me with the explanation of the difference betwen Full Bore and Full Port Valves

why do reduced bore valves tend to be cheaper than full bore valves of the same application?

is it true that full bore valves are preferred over reduced bore valves when the application tends to choke easily?

Hello mashiz,

Check thread 408-20283 for a full explanation of full versus reduced bore ball valves. Full bore valves are used when the pipeline must be cleaned by pigging, or when pressure drop is absolutely critical. There cannot be many applications where sufficient flow exists to "choke" a full open reduced port ball valve. The flow velocity would exceed normal piping design guidelines.

They are smaller, lighter and the design is simpler. I think thats why. Volume may also influence.

The Bore of the valve determines the overall Body size. In other words, it takes more metal to build a full Bore/Port valve than a reduced Bore/Port valve, thus more $$.

FYI Reduced bore valves can also be referred to as Standard bore/port.

My understanding is full bore refers to ball valves, full port refers to globe valves whose orifice size same as the PIPE ID.

Please notice that valves with reduced bore are cheaper against full bore valves due to their smaller torque values and consequently smaller actuators/gear boxes.
Be careful to offer reduced bore in case of pigging requirements for the referring pipeline.

In applications where flow restriction may affect performance of downstream equipment, a full port (full bore) valve is the correct choice.

If pressure is the issue rather than flow, standard port is acceptable.
