We are designing a gravel work pad expansion over this profile 0-1' ice, 1' - 2' water, 2' - 9' saturated peat, then dense hardpan. It is a mottled wetland, so ice not continuous. Any advice on how to handle the ice? If we leave it, it makes a good suface to roll out the AMOCO 4551 nonwoven geotextile, then Tensar BX1200 geogrid, then gravel fill. We have concerns about random ice breakup and melting if we do not remove it before fill is placed...

Removal of the ice is imperative. The geogrids are great but will not span the ice and water for any period of time. What is the work pad for and how permanent is it?

Any stabalization grid requires a minimum amount of negative force (vertical) exerted upon it from materials below it. If you assume the ice melts then you are simply rolling the tensar onto water, there is no situation the tensar will effectively span open water upto two feet in thickness.

If the pad is permanent then stabalization of the pet will also be inorder depending on the gravel thickness and ultimate loading on the pad.

Short answer DRAIN the ICE AND WATER then installt he geogrids, but refer to teh manufacturer for the verical spacing and materials to be used.
