Hi All,
Is it possible to get stresses in user-defined directions rather than in the local coordinate system of the elements?
I know that there is a provision for generating a user defined coordinate system in the visualization mode , but I cannot
decipher the use of it.

Thanks to dankoonFANTOMAS reply on "General question on Abaqus Documentation" , I was able to answer this myself.

This will be a 3 step process. The 3-steps are carried out in visualization module.
1. Create a suitable coordinate system using the Tools --Coordinate System ---Create .Or you can use the toolset listed on left side of viewport window.
2. Go to Results---Options---Transformations---User specified coordinates.
3. Instruct the visulaizer to show the stresses. As an example stress S11 will be direct stress in user defined X-direction

You can even use plot symbols tool bars to get magnitude directly labeled on the viewport.

Thanks

For better explanation
Look into "42.6.8 Transforming results into a new coordinate system" of the user's Guide.
