An acquaintance on another forum has posted a request for a good understandable statics book to compensate for a vague instructor. It sounds like he has put in a lot of time on his own earning a good grade to this point having just covered methods of sections and methods of joints, but is anticipating some rough going ahead.

thanks

There was a thread like this last year, not sure which sub-forum. Search "Beer and Johnson".

"Schiefgehen will, was schiefgehen kann" - das Murphygesetz

The rough portion will not be in the statics portion, it will be in the dynamics portion. Beer and Johnson seems to be the bible in these two topics as it appears that many engineering schools use their book. My suggestion is to do as many problems as humanly possible from each chapter.

I used Engineering Mechanics by J. L. Meriam & L. G. Kraige in college. There were seperate volumes for Statics & Dynamics. I also had a vague instructor and I don't recall the book really helping. Looking back at the Dynamics volume (I think I sold the Statics volume), it actually is pretty good and clear. As an undergrad, I think that the topics were so "new" to me that I struggled then. As chicopee mentioned, doing the problems will be the most beneficial practice.

Sounds high schoolish but try You Tube. They have a lot of videos, obviously, and I believe someone will have posted themselves doing problems and explaining.

Otherwise, work in groups. If you can explain it to another person so that they understand then you will understand it even better. ;-)
