Granite Memorial Anchoring

I just got tasked with designing foundations for a new memorial park. There are a variety of granite benches, posts, plaques, etc. The issue that I am currently having is determining the best way to anchor an 8' Tall x 1'-6" Wide x 8" thick piece of granite. My initial thought is to use something like Hilti to epoxy in dowels to the granite and concrete pier of the foundation. Since the granite is only 8" thick though, I have concerns about how deep I can dowel into it.

Any ideas or references would be greatly appreciated.

Could you provide a sketch of the proposed configuration?

I don't know if you are going to find any references (I could be wrong), but I would recommend working closely with the granite supplier. It would be much more advantageous for them to do any drilling/modifying of the granite in the shop then letting it be field drilled. Also, depending on the situation, you may want to use SS anchors to reduce the amount of rust staining.

Sounds like a cool project! I did one a few years back for the local VFW. Those vets sure don't get enough credit for their sacrifices!

BadgerPE - Thanks for the quick response. It definitely is a pretty cool project, and I don't want to be the reason this monument doesn't look pristine years down the line.
I attached the sketch for the area in question that the Landscape Architect provided me. After talking with them a little more closely this morning, they have agreed to have the granite supplier do the drilling and at this point just want the dowel anchors spec'd out with total embedments, epoxy, etc. The printer/scanner at the office is down right now, so I am unable to upload my hand sketch, but I was thinking just a basic concrete spread footing with a 2' pier and 3 - 24" dowels extending 12" into the center of the granite and 12" into the pier.

Check out this older thread...the last post has a idea for an undercut expansion type anchor up into the bottom of your monolith with a threaded extension hanging out the bottom.
Then use Hilti HIT HY 200 adhesive to secure to the foundation below.

For that tall piece, I would consider using grouted anchoring products by Cathedral Stone. They are suited specifically for natural or cast stone/masonry whether new or historic. Our firm uses them regularly and they can match almost any material color/texture, etc. Definitely stainless anchors. Cast the anchor into the foundation and the granite guy can over size-the anchor holes in the piece and provide grouting and venting holes. If the grout has been ordered to match the granite, the grout and venting holes can be polished to finish.
