After being away from UG for many years, I’m now working for a company that has NX 5. I have written many GRIP programs in the past and I’m wondering if Journal is as robust and powerful as GRIP (we don’t have the necessary license for GRIP development at this time). Can someone provide insight into the options?

While I'm an old time GRIP programmer myself (and still write a few programs a year even now) I have to admit that GRIP is basically obsolete and only as good as it was 20 years ago and pretty much everything which has been added to UG/NX in the interceding years has been left out of GRIP and will never be added (we only maintain but do NOT enhance GRIP). So if you were starting from scratch today, go with Journalizing along with using Visual Basic to customize/modify your journal files to turn them into real programs.

I started with GRIP 10 years ago but got quickly frustrated by its poor Graphical User Interfacing and closed programming world while I had great programming ideas in mind... Just had to wait until the NX serie and the Visual Basic frame accessibility to put the real things in place.

Check this link to get an idea how powerfull things can be with VB now and quickly get yourself a good book to start with - it's much worth the value both for you and your company:

Very impressive!!!

So a UGOpen license is not necessary for Journal?

A UGOpen license is not necessary, but if you want to make use of NX standard dialog boxes and components you will need a license for the interface styler.

There're some basic forms available if you don't have a licence (ask for a string or a number...) like in the GRIP environment but you can't expect to go far with that.
As for the NX interface styler, I'd recommend you use the Microsoft VB package instead; much more easy to handle all modern visual interface tools.
