Hi,
I am looking for are replacement level instrument for 96-98% H2SO4 in a tank with high turn-over and water addition. The current air bubblers (used for indication) tend to fail regularly due to the tubes blocking with corrosion products. THe new isntruments are part of a control system and therefor need higher reliability.

There has been considerable corrosion of dip legs in this tank, as well as of the mild steel roof. Acid spray and mist levels are high, and the surface is not even.

Thanks

Contact Endress Hauser at:

and inquire about the suitability of one of their Radar Liquid Level gauges on your Sulfuric application. If it fits, then I would not go with any other type of level device on this planet at present. It doesn't have to be an Endress Hauser device; any equal quality supplier will do.

This instrument is the safest, smartest and simplest of every device I've ever used in my 44 years in the industry. However, it can't be applied to every liquid or solid invented.

I hope this helps.

scorcher, I agree with Art, go with radar.

Gents,
Thanks for the advice. Radar was my first choice, but although they are the gauge of choice at our site too, we have seen problems with un-even surfaces (tank volume turned over 5-10 times per hour in this case)

Stilling wells are the obvious answer, but surface scale and corrosion products that we see in varoius dip legs in these tanks make me wary of being able to operate with a stilling well. (again this has caused problems elsewhere on site in other processes).

We have also seen problems with steam/fume in the vapour space providing erratic readings. Again this tank will suffer from this.

ps Vega is our prefered supplier.

Another choice for such application could be Gamma Ray type Nuclear level measuring system by either E&H or Ohmart.

Have you looked at the devices offered by Jogler? If you have bridle connections on your tank they make a magnetic gage with a Teflon chamber. I have not used one of their tank gages but they appear to be very robust is design.

Their specific gravity analyzer is one of the safest designs that I have ever seen.

I hope this is of use to you.

You may want to contact Magnetrol, They have a great guided wave radar unit that is a good price. The advantage of the guided wave radar is that it is much less prone to false targets and can handle some waves. You may consider using a high alloy stilling well too so that corrosion is not an issue. If you put large holes in the well (one inch) you should be ok for a long time.

I agree with khan101, go with radiometrics. We use radiometric instruments to take an array of measurements in our plant and they are reliable.

Hi there!

We have a pressure/level converter located in the bottom of our sulfuric acid tank, it is very reliable.

Bye there
