Can anyone tell me whether diluting nitric acid in water from 13m to 3m is an exothermic process and most importantly if so by how much?
I understand this is a slightly chemistryish question but I've tried Perry's and searched the internet but I can't find an answer anywhere.

The CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics may be of help.

At 10°C
Enthalpy per mole of HNO3

0.5 mol H2O -2.02 kcal/molHNO3
1 -3.32
2 -4.89
5 -6.81
10 -7.31
100 -7.21

be careful data is more than 100 years old. I extracted this data from Landolt Bornstein (1976) but actual data is much older. I have not checked whether it's plausible or not.
