I am changing an A-frame Chalet from a wood stove to a Propane stove for heating purposes. The stove is in the living room where the ceiling is two stories. It is at 5000 feet elevation and in the California Sierra Nevada mountains so it can have cold weather and heavey snow. As the house is only 16 years it is pretty well insulated with double paned windows but being a chalet there are a lot of windows. There are about 400 feet in the upstairs bedroom and 1200 feet of living space downstairs. There is a ceiling fan to push the hot air downward. I can not decidee wether to install a 30,000 or a 40,000 BTu unit in this confioguration. Any ideas. There are electric wall heaters in every room which I plan to discontect but I will leave the ones active in the bathrooms for comfort and the two downstairs bedrooms in active since the heat is not going to naturally circualte there .

Thanks Ron Garber

Ron, I would install the 30,000 BTU heater but leave the electric heaters connected just in case you have some extremely cold weather at least for a winter season.

Don't forget to have the propane burner de-rated for high altitude or you will face some serious combustion problems.
