Gross output power is the total electric power generated at the terminal of the electric generator. But not all of this power generated is transmitted to the grid. Some of the power are used for auxiliaries such as air conditioning, fans, pumps, lighting etc, all to keep the electric generator running efficiently. Net electrical power transmitted is the gross power generated minus the power consumed by these auxiliaries. I hope this helps.

Gross power output is the power as measured with a Wattmeter at the generator output terminal sand includes the auxiliaries mentioned by Ethan, but not accessories directly driven by the engine.
eg: excluding Engine fan, Engine water pump, battery charging alternator, etc.

Not just a good idea;
It's the LAW!

Gross power is the total power generated by the generator, including auxiliary power. The auxiliary power may be 8 to 10 % of the gross power. Therefore, we get net power less than the gross power.

Net power= Gross power - Auxilary power

To build on what Bill wrote: Or, for other prime movers, any such mechanical loads including shaft-driven lubricating or governor oil pumps, circulating blowers/fans for hydrogen-cooled alternator, the minimal but very essential load of any hydraulic governing system itself, if any; numerous other possible direct mechanical loads are possible, none of which will be measured at the alternator/generator output terminals.
