I need to find a pipe supplier to get a piece of SA 106 GR B pipe to machine down to 8.250 ID x 9.250 OD x .500 nom. thk.

I currently have taken a piece of 8" sch 80 (.500 nom.)and expanded it to 8.250 ID. I am having it magnaflux tested to check for cracks. After expanding, the material thickness thinned down to .450 thk.. I figure the percentage of expanding is 7.145%.

The customer also states SA 106 GR B as "tubing". I my book SA 106 GR B is seamless pipe. They stated their previous vessel supplier is using it why can't you. I asked for them to supply me with the supplier info but they can't do that.

This is being used as a shell section in a pressure vessel. Any comments or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

sounds like you're doing it the hard way - why not roll up & weld some 1/2" plate to suit?

There's got to be a better way to accomplish the end result. The first thought is re-engineer the end product to fit the pipe, rather than having to make pipe to fit the product.

Although not as common as pipe, you can buy mechanical tubing in some odd sizes. I don't know that any of it meets A106 spec, necessarily.

Shows a 9.25" OD x 8.25" ID x 1/2" wall mechanical tubing as a stock item.

Arto,

We have used 1/2" rolled and welded shell in previous design's but I was trying to exhaust all avenues to take cost out of fabricating and machining. I was also trying to do the "If they can do it, then I can do it" scenario.

Thanks to everyone for their response,

Ben

BTJLPI,
From an AI's standpoint I would concur with JStephen's post. Such an approach would save you a lot of headaches ( and money ), if feasible.

Ron

May try getting 1018 tubing material, which is made in all sizes, may still have to get it machine.
