High Early Strength Concrete? 1

Are there any pitfalls to be aware of when specifying high early strength concrete? Or any thoughts, comments, or experiences with it that you'd care to share? Thanks in advance.

Some mixtures may become brittle early in the curing process and/or have higher than typical shrinkage due to higher cement content and may have durability issues because of this. Curing is critical.
If the supplier and contractor are diligent and capable, you can get a good product.

Attend to thermal concerns due to excessive heat and sharp temperature gradients in members. Fast strength development means heat is generated faster and needs to be dissipated more quickly. This can apply in members smaller than those typically associated with mass concrete.

I have had good experience using high early strength concrete as long as it is well cured. I recommend specifying a minimum 7 day wet cure, burlap and plastic continuously wet.
