I am sure it must be possible to roll up two lead sheets and place these into a beaker of electrolyte to make a practical and very low cost lead acid cell. In any home solar application the batteries are a major expense, and I am wondering if anyone has ever seen this done ?

Doesn't sound like an efficient proposition - I don't think a homebrew cell would be able to compete with a commercial product in terms of charge density, energy storage capability etc at anything like the same low cost. Never mind the horrendous environmental outcomes possible with every Tom, Dick and Harry playing with molten lead in his shed at home!
