I would like to get your ideas about life of an ongoing project ... in that project we've been using NC GRIP codes and due to incompatibility to upper versions we are keeping one license of v15 ... there is no problem at the moment , but I can not foreseen 2-3 yrs later ... do you see any threat to our project ?

thanks in advance ,

You should have no problems unless you need to rely on UGS for support.

The other thing to watch is the computer it is running on. As long as your IT group agrees to allow a WinNT machine, assuming you are on Windows, to stay on the network, you shouldn't have a problem.

One another thing is the operating system , this year and coming years will be the years of windows upgrade to 64Bit..

Now, all NX series upto NX3 is designed ,tested and certified on Windows 32Bit systems (systems includes both software and hardware) ... NX4 is different in this series , it can operate in either 32Bit or 64Bit systems...

Now, let's come back to your situation ... you are mentioning about 2-3 years along the road .. if you change your operating system and related hardware in order to run NX4-5-6 , most likely you will not be able to run v15 on this environment. This is not true just for v15 ; the NX series upto NX4 will have an impact due to this upgrade , all previous certificates will be non sense ..

The wise thing to do here (especially from a smart business standpoint) is to spend some of your "spare time" upgrading/converting your old GRIP codes to meet the requirements of the newer software. If you wait until the last minute, it is going to really cost you.

Theoretically, you can use v15 until you get tires of it and do not require GTAC support. Reality is that you are going to run into the scenarios that have already been mentioned here in the previous posts.

Larrycoyle,
I could be wearing ugiismart's shoes, and I've been munching on this problem for the last couple of months. I have to ask the question though, is it "worth it" to wait until NX4 and upgrade the old grip code, or should a new language be implemented that would be better suited for todays technology?
I work in a forge shop (existing company but new owners with a strong desire to concentrate on aerospace markets versus land based power generation). Updating the technology is happenning, expected, and being paid for by the owners, but legacy product lines still need to be manufactured and shipped.
Your thoughts? ...or anyone else for that matter. :)

SS
CAD should pay for itself, shouldn't it?

SS,
What new language are you hoping for that UGS hasn't announced? GRIP is basically dead, I think we will agree with that part. UG/Open API has been enhanced since V18 to include the CAM functionality that everyone used GRIP for. Since I am not a current user, I don't know how completet the toolkit is, but I understand it covers CAM pretty well. The new journalling will take some time to figure out waht it can really do. My first thoughts are that it merly replaces the macro (recorded keystrokes) repetitive operation functionality. Maybe some one can explain if it is really a programming language.

Changes in technology happen. If you choose to sit on a version forever (or a few years) then you will see productivity drop as you cannot take advantage of newer technology that may do an old function in 1/2 or less of the time. It is a never ending circle that you can run with or get caught out of and try to get back in at a later date.

ugiismart,

You might also want to see if some of your current grip routines are now being handled as standard features (or close to) now. They've added a lot of things since v15.

Sorry for not monitoring this forum closer but as for your question... Since NX4 is already out (I have been using it for a while and actually did some beta testing) I would ask my rep for a 30day trial and experiment with updating your routines.
