I am designing a connection detail for a 18' high 4" square lighting pole. how to calculation wind load on the pole?
there is an equation in ASCE 7: 6-27
but the gust-effect factor from section 6.5.8 is too complicated.
does anybody know there are other equations can be used? Thanks.

You need to take into account any fixtures that might be attached to the pole. Use the lighting pole manufacturer's EPA (Effective Projected Area) and apply the appropriate amount of wind based on the area placed at the top of the pole.
Don't design it for just what's being attached now because someone might attach more fixtures in the future.

I'm not sure if vortex shedding will be an issue with a square cross section, but I suspect it will.

When the analysis is done on the 45 degree axis, vortex shedding will be a factor.
