How to restrict the interference between Elements in ABAQUS?

I am doing 2D simulation of machining (Turning) in ABAQUS software. I have used the surface-surface contact between Workpiece and tool , and self-contact on the upper surface of Workpiece. When I see the results, and play the simulation, the chip is interfering/merging inside the workpiece element.How to avoid this interference?

 

[FEA way]

Try using general contact (in newer versions it works with 2D models as well). Adding interior surface for erosion may also help.
