How to solve geometry interpenetration 1

Hello Experts,

I have this geometry of a composite fabric generated from an external software. The CAD model has numerous overlapping geometries or intersections. I have tried to work with "Heal Geometry" tool but it doesn't work in this case. Is there any way to solve this problem?

So do you have a math model or a faceted model? What I see in the image is a faceted model and you're not going to be able to do much with that. You need a true 3D model - STEP would be the preferred neutral file format versus STL, which is only for faceted models and not much can be done with them in CAD, at least not to the extent that can be done with a math based model.

Dear Tim,

The file is in .stp format only. Yes it is a faceted model. I'm trying to create a 3D model using sew geometry option. Can the interpenetrations be solved after "sew" operation?

Off the top of my head, you can do 1 of 3 things:

1. Trim the surfaces of the strands where they intersect and allow the Sew to fill the holes left in the volumes.

2. Sew the surfaces into solids then use Trim Body where their volumes intersect (you will have to do this on both sides of the intersections).

3. Sew the surfaces into solids then use Unite and don't worry about the intersections.

Things to note:

Options 1 & 3 should result in a single solid body. Option 2 should result in each strand being single solid body. Depending upon the density of the weave, this may cause long update times.

I loaded the supplied step file into NX12.0.1
It then creates an assy + 12 components.
each component contains a single solid body.
These solids have many small triangular faces. ( see the image in the first post)
There are small interferences between the bodies.

What is it that you want to do with these ?
What is wrong ?

Dear Tomas,

Yes, these bodies are made up of small triangular faces. I want to remove those small "interferences" between the bodies firstly and then find a way to smoothen the surface i.e. maybe try to merge triangular faces into to form one monolithic structure in this case 12 smooth components. Hope this clears out something. [ponder]
