Well, the subject says it all. I want to copy the basic settings, like toolbars, preferences etc to another machine.

Is there a way to carry everything over? Maybe even between an 32bit and an 64bit NX installation?

So far I found the folder with the user.mtx but it seems to contain only the toolbar configuration.

Cheers

For Customer Defaults it's recommended that you open the Customer Default dialog in your current version of NX and and select the 'Manage Current Settings' icon (the eyeball in the upper-right corner of the main dialog). Now select the 'Export Defaults' icon (4th from the top on the right) and export a file which is a copy of your current defaults.

Now start NX 7.0 and again go to Customer Defaults and once again select the 'Manage Current Settings' icon and this time select the 'Imports Defaults' icon (3rd from the top) and browse to and select the file you just exported from the older system. Now you may get a message, either then or the first time you start your next session of NX 7.0, which might indicate that certain settings were ignored. That's normal, it's just letting you know the some of the old settings have been obsoleted in the NX 7.0, but there is nothing that you need to do as they will be ignored and you will only see this message once.

So between this and copying over the 'user.mtx' file, you should cover about 90% of the settings. There are still some which are saved in the registry and while it's possible to copy registry settings it's not recommended and you'll just have to go into Preferences and reset those few items which are not covered by Customer Defaults or the .mtx file (this includes most of settings under Selection and a few of User Interface ones, if you've changed them from the out-of-the-box settings).

Now the only thing to be careful of is that you really should run NX 7.0 using one of the 'Advanced Full-Menu' Roles just to see what new toolbars/icons have been added which might get overwritten or hidden by your copied .mtx file. If you feel the difference are minor, go ahead and use that existing 'user.mtx' and then just manually turn ON the whatever new items might be of interest to you and then save a new Role (this is what I do with each version up that I do) and you're back in business.

John, thank you for the detailed instructions!
Will the way you described work to transfer the setting from a 32bit to 64bit installation and vice versa?

That shouldn't make any difference since while the file's content may be a bit hard to read, they're still just simple text files.

That is great. Will try it soon. Thank you.
