For those looking for an updated RPN calculator there is a new version of the HP 15c that was released recently that looks to fix some bugs and significantly increase computation speed.

Anyone still using handheld calculators beyond just punching in numbers these days?

I went on a bit of a “calculator” history detour a year or so back that had me using a slide rule for a bit, fascinating tools, and then transitioned to a keystroke programmable HP 11c and decided to treat myself recently and purchased one of the Swissmicros DM42.

I've heard wonderful things about electronic shifting and I look forward to trying it. At the same time, there is a part of me that is loath to trade a simple, mechanical solution that works flawlessly for an electrical solution that involves wires, batteries, motors, and blue tooth.

One of the supposed added benefits of the new generation of electronic shifting (SRAM T-Type) is the ability to actually shift better under load - which is the opposite of mech. and even their 1st gen electronic derailler systems. Gonna be hard for me to un-learn to back off the gas when shifting.

Ok, the 15C showed up. So weird not having to wait for calculator to finish an operation. It is burned into my muscle memory to always pause after hitting y^x.
The keyboard needs breaking in but otherwise pretty f'n nice.

You all are a bunch of NEEERRRRRRDDDDDDSSSSSS!!!!!!!!! I wish I could give wedgies over the internet.

I just was went through a box and was thrilled to find my old HP48G from college, still works great, forgot how much I loved the stack method.

Just turned 49, so guess what that makes me...

All of my programming is now off calculator with one major exception. I had a setup going my my HP48's that I can only describe as a construction calculator on steroids. It allowed me to use units seamlessly and to use a 6" plastic, metric ruler to scale anything and draw anything to scale. This isn't something that I've been able to replicate well on any other calculator.

How have you got that set up, if it's a brief explanation? This is the thing I've never liked on my HP. The units are really clunky. In the Canadian half metric half imperial world having quick unit support is a very nice thing to avoid the "wait, I'm working in kN-ft for some reason" situations.

Which HP model are you using? My stuff is setup for whatever language came native on the 48/49/50. If we're compatible, I'll just post the source code with a brief description. The construction calculator is much more important to me than are the units. The units were set up exploiting the CST menu system such that you can convert with left and right shift operations. Separate CST's setup up for different materials etc. Slick.

When I went to college we used slide rules and punch cards, then the rich kids got calculators. After graduating I dialed into a university computer using a 300 Baud modem to upload input decks and download output decks. My first computer was an Apple with 64k of RAM. My trusty HP15 just last week refused to turn on without PR ERROR that only goes away with about 20 cycles of on off on off. I use the Windows and Android versions of Free42, and MathCad 15 with Excel and VBA when needed. Don't know my mechanical pencil's name because it has worn off but the it ends with what might just be TLER 925 0.5. My bike is a Trek having sold my other 2. My cars were BMW 325i (final model year, all options), before that were all SAABs (Sonett, 99, 900, 9000), learned to drive on a SAAB 93. My inline skates are K2. About hte only thing own that is modern is my backpacking gear where light equals being able to still spend a week in the woods. I'm so old I was on the committee that wrote the EPA emissions estimating roles for storage tanks. My library of vinyl is being played on an Andover Model 1 (awesome actually). My lignastone edged x-country skis are still being hand waxed and my 25 year old K2 4-buckle downhill boots are headed for the recycle bin.
