Hi everybody,

I need average HSLA steel content data of passenger cars, trucks and other vehicle if it's available

thank you

You could also look in the annual report of the relevant steel supplier, I suspect they'll include how much of each type of automotive steel they supply.

Quick guess: trucks:not much cars: say 30kg

30 kg may be a bit optimistic.

HSLA has its place, but most of the car structure is STIFFNESS limited, and HSLA is no help there.

Yes, but ULSAB is not representative of current practice, and is rather a bogus project, in my opinion.

A presentation by Ford on the new Ford Five Hundred body structure showed HSLA 250 and HSLA 350 accounted for 26% of the BIW mass. Estimating a total BIW mass of 200 kg (probably too low) would be 52 kg of these two grades. A GM presentation showed a midsize/luxury vehicle would typically be composed of 34% HSLA, which would be considerably more than 50 kg per vehicle. However, the Chevy Malibu from the GM Global Epsilon platform was only 5% HSLA, and newer vehicles would use Dual Phase steels instead of HSLA for many parts (front rails, etc.). The following links are for specific presentations from the AISI Great Designs in Steel seminars:

Published data (like the GDIS information linked by TVP) is for BIW and closures. HSLA has many uses on other parts, like strength-limited chassis parts. I think you will have a difficult time finding this data.

I couldn't find the composition of HSLA 250. Actually, I'm interested in HSLA steels containing Nb (niobium)

Do you know content of HSLA 250?

thanks

I suggest you contact the manufacturers.

However 250 is not much of a step up from boggo sheet, I doubt it has much exotic content, it is probably just made from a better grade of scrap with some carbon removed (WAG).

mitoz,

HSLA is covered under specifications like SAE J2340 Categorization and Properties of Dent Resistant, High Strength, and Ultra High Strength Automotive Sheet Steel. The grades start with 300S, which has a minimum yield stress of 300 MPa.

Greg,

I am not sure what boggo sheet is, but I will assume it is one of the drawing quality/deep drawing quality/extra deep drawing quality grades used to make most of the body-in-white for an automobile. These steels have very low carbon concentration (typically < 0.1 mass percent, or even <0.002% for Interstitial Free grades) so that they have low strength and can be very formable.

HSLA develops its strength by forming carbide particles, so it must have carbon (and either Ti, Nb, or V). The carbon concentration for these is typically (0.02 to 0.13) mass percent.

Any steel for automotive structures will be made from the highest quality steel, either from an integrated steel supplier that uses iron ore and some scrap or from a mini-mill that uses up to 100% scrap steel as the raw material.

Regards,

Cory
