Hi all,
What if any tools to you think (or better yet, actually use) professional hvac engineers should have, ie flow meters, anemometers, balancing hood etc.

BSME degree, BlackBerry, calculator, Trane ductulator and BG system syzer. All in that order.

Sling Psychrometer or instruments for measuring wet bulb and dry bulb temperature

I just wet my finger and wave it around for wetbulb... seriously.

The only tools I'd add would be a decent load calc software, a membership with ASHRAE (for the handbooks and other materials), a well stocked liquor cabinet...

The tools required will depend on the role of the HVAC Engineer.

And watch out for those sling psychrometers! They hurt when you get hit by one, and they're horribly inaccurate when not used properly.

If you're a design engineer, a good AutoCAD program and some reference books will do. If you're an energy-saving-analysis engineer, you'll need to analyze lots of things in the field, but it's better to acquire the test tools as you find a real need for them.

Good on ya,

Goober Dave

Probably TESTO 435 will be useful or similar instrument for getting basic data of any installation.

Experience and common sense

the whole industry revolves around the pychrometric chart

The way we build has a far greater impact on our comfort, energy consumption and IAQ, than any HVAC system we install
