Hi Guy's
I'm having trouble importing Autocad dxf/dwg into NX4.
With the dxf version I just get lines , and with the dwg
version the views are all missing.
Has anybody had experience with this before.
Thanks

Where the files created in AutoCad?
What version of AutCad created the files?

UG has never supportted DXF files created by systems other than AutoCad.
There are also DXF version limitations to importing the files into NX.

Hi looslib

The files were created in Autocad 2002.
After I have imported them, the views are not
in the drawing. And the dimensions and text are
displayed in a dashed line font, and broken into lines.

Have you tried looking in the standrad UG views?
Also, look at the views created in NX by the import.

When importing a dxf into NX3, I get all of the drawing in modeling, without separate drafting views. I simply add the model view created by NX3 (Active#1) into a new sheet in drafting. Not sure how NX4 handles this.

I could have this confused with IGES importing, but I believe in order for drawings to import into Drafting, you have to use the standalone translators and not import during an NX session, per se.

I'm pretty sure this applies to at least one of the translators, but I'm not sure if DXF is the one.

Clarification to my post above: "When importing..." shold read "When opening a dxf in NX3..."

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I have tried importing the file in a NX session
and with the stand alone translator , both produce
the same result.
It looks to me like the DWG file doesn't have the 3d model.
In modeling all I see is a few lines.
In drafting the dims and notes are there , but no views.
Is anybody here familiar with Autocad 2002?

The last AutoCAD version I worked with was 2000. Unless they added a LOT more functionality to their solid modeling, there is likely NO solid in your dwg file.

In ACAD 2000 there was solid modeling, but it was not associative at all making it more of a headache than a useful feature. I also used their Mechanical Desktop (v4) modeling package which was pretty nice. I think Inventor has since replaced Mechanical Desktop.

Darth, (Lord Vader?) ;o)

Have you checked the Autocad forum here on this site for someone that might be familiar with your issue? Sounds to me like the Acad drawing needs to be flattened into just curves and text prior to translating it to a neutral 2D file format (screen dump or whatever you wish to call it...just a WYSIWYG). We sometimes have the same problem exporting drawings from NX.

Thanks nkwheelguy

For anyone that's interested.
The process (and it is a process) is to import
the Autocad 2002 drawing into Autocad "lite",
and then export the file as an "Autocad Release 12"
DXF.
This gives the best result.
