My company using an Mitsui-ABB Steam Turbine with Meiden Brushless Alternator 27500KVA, unfortunately after more than 10 years of continues operation, this generator never been major overhauled, we only do minor overhaul every two years.

We did'nt have the complete manual book, so we are definetedly confuse about what we should do on major overhaul (Electric works for Generator).

Could anybody explain to me, what is the work item (Electrical work) for the Generator's major overhaul, what should we check or inspect, what parts should we replace, and what is the time interval for major overhaul?

Buy the book and talk to the manufacturer if you still have questions.

In my experience, our generators were rewound once every 30 years unless there was something that was obviously wrong. Some of the tests we do are a hipot and PD (Partial discharge) test on the stator. We also test the rotor for shorted turns. Keep in mind that the Hipot is a destructive test. In other words, if your stator fails the test, it needs to be rewound before going back into service as a failure results in a breach of the insulation.

A PD test is totally different than a Hipot. Hiot is a pass/fail test. PD is a life expectancy prediction. It is a science best left to the professionals in the field.

Other than those items, the only other tests we did were for protective relaying to ensure our CTs were measuring properly and we would test our relays for proper operation.

If it is broken, fix it. If it isn't broken, I'll soon fix that.

Internal inspection, plus clean the windings, check wedges and blocking for tightness, repair any discharge sites. RSO test for the rotor, definitely consider PD monitoring.

Where are you located?

If we learn from our mistakes I'm getting a great education!
