I am sealing roof and floor truss calculations from the Mitek program and am looking for liability insurance (E&O insurance) for my side business. I am only stamping these components and am not the engineer of record. The problem is the trend in Las Vegas is toward more condominium projects right now. I am having trouble finding an insurer that will cover condos.
Any help would be appreciated.

ASCE has a good E&O insurance for part time work when you are covered by another insurance during your regular job. Check it out at I am not sure how they will be on condo's but they will give you and estimate of insurance costs.

I agree with RockEngineers.

Are you stamping without doing the real design being done by you or your direct supervision? I hope you are not doing that!

Since most condo associations are so "sue" happy, most E&O insurance companies will not cover you if your projects are mostly condo's.

I have DPIC for my E&O.

I agree with LUTFI....hopefully are are not just rubber stamping the calcs......you can get yourself and your current employer in a hole lot of trouble. You could loose your license for doing that.

Also, note that since this is yopur side business, should you be involved in a suit, your current employer can also be included in the suit since you are "moonlighting".

I know from experience the money is great "moonlighting" but you need to evaluate the risk with the reward. I never did any major design work moonlighting....I limited myself to residential design (one and two family type)......The risk was not worth the reward in my opinion. Especisally if I could loose my license with one claim. I worked to hard to get it to potentially loose it.....

Food for thought

Condo works is an extreme risk; Not one lawsuit, every association member can initiate a seperate action. Also, residential work is an extreme risk due to the lack of owner's understanding regarding the limits of our responsibilities.
I know a structural egineer that did an inspection and was sued years later for failing caulking on windows. Another when roof shingles went bad 8 years later. These are not structural items, but they hauled him in anyway.

Thank you all for your input. I am not rubber stamping the designs. All under direct supervision. Condos are just a real mess right now.
