Just walked by this in downtown Burlington VT. Wow!

You know, based on alignment with the windows and the roof vestibule (pardon my lack of architectural vocubulary) above... Part of me thinks there is a chance the brace is actually aligned with a stair landing. In which case... I'd be inclined to say it not only works, it probably calcs out too. Of course, that's a guess from just the one picture. ---- just call me Lo.

What is on the other side of that exterior panelling? Dunno for sure. I imagine wood studs. This is not a job of mine - passed on my way to get coffee.

The "miracle column" only looks weird because the contractor ignored the note that said "Paint to match".
