Hi all,

What is the difference between ISO 3183 & API 5L(44th Edition)?

Thanks in advance

Apart from one being published by API and the other by ISO, Annex N - 35 pages of deviations. Now you see why the latest version has split from ISO 3183.

Steve,

With the greatest of respect as I know you comment on these issues with lots of knowledge and experience, the 44th edition of 5L and 3183:2007 is one and the same document jointly published. The latest ISO code and the 45th are still essentially the same so I think it is a bit far to say they "split" - maybe just "moved out for a while"

Annex N of the 44th edition is an annex of 6 pages (there might be 35 items) listing some specific items where if this is used as an American national standard, then these changes and additional items apply. Many appear to be relatively cosmetic, but I'm sure there are a few which make a difference, the intent was that it was one document and one basic specification and even in the latest two versions that still applies AFAIK.

The key differences now are that the ISO code included for an annex M for European gas pipeline material to allow EN 10208 to be withdrawn. See page 3 of this. and this for more info

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way

No problem LI - thanks for chipping in. It's a long time since I fought the good fight in Germany to get 3183 to the publishers. In my pdf file of the 5L 44th edition, Annex N starts on pdf page 152 and ends on pdf page 187. I haven't really reviewed the substance of the Annex, but a brief scan indicates some improvements and some widening of the door to be able to drive the bus through. The 45th edition simply has Annex N to maintain a historic continuity without it having content. The absence of any mention of 3183 on the front cover does smack of divorce proceedings.
