From the BBC, "Six Italian scientists and an ex-government official have been sentenced to six years in prison over the 2009 deadly earthquake in L'Aquila.

A regional court found them guilty of multiple manslaughter.

Prosecutors said the defendants gave a falsely reassuring statement before the quake, while the defence maintained there was no way to predict major quakes.

The 6.3 magnitude quake devastated the city and killed 309 people.

Many smaller tremors had rattled the area in the months before the quake that destroyed much of the historic centre.

It took Judge Marco Billi slightly more than four hours to reach the verdict in the trial, which had begun in September 2011.

Lawyers have said that they will appeal against the sentence. As convictions are not definitive until after at least one level of appeal in Italy, it is unlikely any of the defendants will immediately face prison"

Wish we coudl do the same with "weather people" !!

Who would become a "weather person" in that case?

Don't mess with Judge Marco Billi...

Sounds like he's from SOUTH Italy.

Hehehehehe... at least they didn't take them out and shoot them!

For this Italian judge nothing in this world is for sure except death, taxes, and predicting earthquakes.

The Inquisition is back!

I think the keyword here is "falsely reassuring statement before the quake".

But still I don't think the buildings in that region were built after these "falsely statement" as it is historic area as I remember???!!!

So how he decides to judge them for manslaughter charges?
Maybe he has limited knowledge about earthquakes?

Regarding "falsely reassuring statement before the quake", scientists indicated to those concerned that a large earthquake was unlikely. They were right then, and they're still right now. The earthquake was unlikely to happen. Occasionally the unlikely happens. Apparently that's good enough for manslaughter. Remind me to never go work in Italy.
