We run a Mazak Super Turbo X-510 1500 watt laser and are having trouble cutting stainless with nitrogen assist gas. We're not quite understang why, but we keep getting a jagged edge on one side of the cut. The jagged edge seems to be the side closest to the clamps when traveling in the X axis. When traveling in the Y axis the jagged edge jumps from one side to the other. We checked the nozzle (with scotch tape) and it seems to be centered properly. We have also tried to increase the gas pressure to 7kg(according to the gauge on the nozzle; i think thats about 100psi) and we have tried to speed the feedrate up. We would appreciate any feedback anyone can give. Also, if anyone has any cutting conditions for .250 or .125 zinc and any cutting conditions for Lexan it would help us very much.
We would like to thank anyone in advance for their help- and thanks to the creators of this board. Gary L. Ellis Jr.

Also, if anyone has a similar laser and can email us 14ga and 11ga ss cutting conditions with N2 assist gas we would greatly appreciate it. That will give us some sort of a base to compare our conditions to. Gary L. Ellis Jr.

YES, THNAKS. LOWERING THE FOCAL POINT HELPED TO IMPROVE THE CUT, BUT WE STILL ARE GETTING A JAGGED EDGE. ITS NOT ALL AT ONCE...JUST HERE AND THERE- AND VERY DIFFICULT TO CLEAN OFF. IF ANYONE HAS ANY CUT CONDITIONS FOR MAZAK 1500W THAT THEY WANT TO DONATE, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT.

ALSO IF ANYONE HAS CUT ANY TYPE OF CERAMIC-TYPE MATERIALS I WOULD APPRECIATE THE HELP WITH ANY CUT CONDITIONS. THE MATERIAL I AM TRYING TO CUT NOW IS CALLED DME INSULATOR FROM A MOLD BASED COMPANY.

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP.

Hello,

A burr on one side usually means that the beam is not centered good enough. when cutting stainless it is very critical to have a centered beam!! The other cause for a Burr on one side is Constant Gas Pressure!! if you have a gas gauge mounted to or close to the head, note where the gas pressure Drops, You will most likely find a burr there!!

Are you using a Non-Contact Head or a spoon ?

do you have a Proportion Air Valve? (which ensures Constant accurate Gas Flow)!!

Hope this was helpful,

Dan

A couple of other points. The beam could be wondering inside the tip do to misalignment or laser resonator problems. As Dan pointed out gas flow is also very important.

Does it always happen on the same spot on the machine or is it random and can it happen anywhere?

Scott

With Stainless Steel, the dross on the bottom edge of the cut is mainly due to gas pressure and beam centrallity. We cut with N2 pressures exceeding 12Bar and focus set to the bottom surface. This gives a clear kerf and the Hi pressure gas clears the melt quickly before it freezes. The dross that appears only on one edge is usually due to beam alignment or the beam moving as the various axis move, ie the x axis move may produce dross but a move in the y is clear. You seem to have identified dross formation near the clamps, this would be consistant with a disruption of the gas exit flow as the cut passes near to a clamp body.
