Hello everyone,

I'm a recently graduated engineer in Welding and thanks to God i was also able to get a job not so long after my graduation as a junior engineer in welding for a company that essentially build tank storage, boiler and pressure vessel. It's been only one month since i started working and i'm only doing administrative work so far and that bothers me a little bit.

I found this forum while i was searching about ASME and API codes that the company uses, so i thought that i could ask for some advises here on how i could get a successful career in this field regardless the country you start on (i live in north Africa), like what certifications do i need to focus on ? if there are many which one do i need to start with ?

Also, for my current job i think the main skill that i need to master is writing wps, i've searched about it a lot and watched some videos but still didn't find any "real example" or practice to really get the thing, like i know how to read it and what it must contains but there are some points that i didn't get for examples the equivalence of materials.

Thanks all for reading this, i look forward to get some interactions with you.

Best regards,

I hope you have a good mentor to help teach you. With 1-month in you are only capable of assisting. I recommend joining AWS and getting its Welding Handbooks. ASM has a valuable Welding Volume as well and there are numerous article on the WEB. Watch the welders as they work and talk to them about their problems with welding specific materials that your company uses in its constructed items. Have the applicable construction Codes at your fingertips and don't be afraid to ask questions of your fellow engineers.

Thank you weldstan for replying, but as a newbie what are the advantages from being an AWS member apart from their welding handbooks ?

AWS has numerous information on its web site. It also lists names of Certified Welding Engineers, who might be contacted. It also has some international chapters that you might be able to join.

Learn the Codes and Standards very thoroughly.
Knowing the true details of what is required is important.
Many people make assumptions and just do things like they always have.
Know the details of quality systems as well.
This could set you up to inspection or audit work in the future.

Thanks EdStainless, do you have any methode or idea to get to know the codes and standard ? There's a looot stuff to know i always try to get a quick overview on any code then make a deep dive in every section.

Also do you have any video or article to recommend to know how to make a wps ?
