Can anyone advise what tolerance class should be used on the bore of a bore and keyed coupling i.e H8?

Cheers,

Kieran

Above is for Shaft/Bore. Nothing to do with K'way. Your post is confusing.

I know sorry about that. Thanks for the info any way. Much appreciated.

Do mean BS 4235-1:1972 ?

- Specification for metric keys and keyways - Parallel and taper keys

Good afternoon... can i patend "the wheel" ?

According to DIN: (dimensions in mm)

Length of key (from-to)
Tolerance for key length
Tolerance for keyway length

6-28
-0.2
+0.2

32-80
-0.3
+0.3

90-400
-0.5
+0.5

Hope that helps

Advice from lecturer: "Be warned - when you go into industry your boss will give you a thousand things to do and he wants them done yesterday!" So far he is right...

Forgot to add:

For shafts 10 to 22mm diameter the keyway/key depth tolerance is +0.1mm and it is +0.2mm for shafts 22 to 110mm diameter.

The width of the keyway is usually a P9 tolerance: the key needs to be pressed in (small rubber hammer will do), and cannot fall out.

Kieran88 - Find DIN 6880 - bright key steel, dim's and tol..
Square key steel ISO tol. field h9.

For keyways:
DIN 6885 T1, T2, T3
On shaft: Tight fit P9, light fit N9
In bore: Tight fit P9, light fit JS9

Based on ISO Recommendation Nr. 1084 - Rectangular and square keys and their corresponding keyways.

Kieran88 - The above is for the key and keyway only.
If you are looking for the shaft and bore than you need to tell us more about what kind of fit you are looking for (press, sliding etc.).

Thanks for all the advice guys, i should have thought about the thread title as i was enquiring about the bore tolerances in relation to bore and keys.

Would you still use ISO tolerances on imperial shafts and bores?

Kieran88 - yes. Look at your MHB. All ISO Tol. are given in imperial.
