Ballast Pump is also called ballast tank pump or ballast water pump. It is a pump for transferring or discharging water ballast. Ballast pump is a very important marine pump or marine water pump.
Ballast pump delivery water in and out of the ballast water tanks. When it is loading, off-loading and trim of the vessel. The ballast is generally seawater. It is pumped into tanks known as ballast tanks. These tanks are filled by the ballast pump in order to add weight to the ship. When cargo has been discharged, to improve its stability.
Ballast tanks reduce the centre of gravity on the vessel. It is to enable the crafts to be stable. These ballast pumps are designed to efficiently transfer vast amounts of sea water. It is into the marine vessels ballast tanks or to empty it if necessary. Ship ballast pump is most usually centrifugal pumps. Because they can satisfy these needs most effectively.

Hope these is some useful information for somebody.

Interesting. What is the maximum head that has to be pumped? I presume these are all submersibles? How do you prevent seawater contamination or inter-port transfer of invasives?

Hello, Buggar.
basically, the marine ballast pump head is not very high, I mean, compared with the marine fire pump or marine cooling pump. Max head is usually below 100m.
Yes, you are right, there is a kind of submersible ballast pump, this is very popular for the oil tanks.
As for the seawater contamination, I think a ballast water treatment system is requested, usually the ballast pump is part of such kind of system.
It is just my personal opinion.

This gives me ideas. Are the ballast pumps packaged, removable units, complete with all stilling wells and related? We installed dewatering pumps in caissons but built them up from available products. It would have been nice to have a commercially available, marine-capable drop-in unit. 100 m of head will float a pretty deep caisson. And we don't need the flow volume of fire or cooling pumps.
