ladder rungs made from re-bar

is re-bar is an acceptable material for rungs on a caged ladder
these ladders are used in a gas plant in alberta

Thanks for the additional comments and info about welding rebars. I agree, problems with rebar welding can be solved when properly addressed.

OSHA ladder standards cover the design load requirements for rungs, so that issue is always addressed. I believe OSHA calls for a miminum rod diameter of 3/4 inch, so a #6 or larger rod wouyld normally be required. The deformations aid in the non-slip performance.

We always use rebar for ladder rungs and have never experienced any problems. We always punch the side rails, and weld the ends of the rebar on the inside and outside of the rail. A punched 3/4" hole seems to give good clearance for most #6 rebar but a drilled hole is a little too tight. Be careful though, because punching all of those holes into a piece of flat bar can turn it into a banana. They were using rebar when I started working here, and I never really gave it a second thought.
 
Qshake... I've spec'd it and seen it in final position... works really well...
