Might be interesting - look up Cyclone Gabrielle. We had a cyclone at the tail end of one of the rainiest sequences of 12 months ever. The imagery really puts things into perspective.

Really interested in what research might come out of this from institutes like GNS. On the state highways it seems as though as often as not the slips on the highways are caused by poor stormwater management, failures of stormwater infrastructure (i.e. a culvert gets blocked by something, water builds up and the road erodes out), or the lack of sort of network-level consideration of stormwater flows in extreme events (failures occur where water is naturally concentrated, or a huge fill blocking a gully or a natural flowpath was placed for the road with only a small culvert through it, or no consideration of water at all).

Interesting stuff! Could be a good opportunity for researches using TRIGRS / Scoops3d or other regional-scale software.
