Hi,

can we use appendix 1-7 for non radial openings?
I am reading App 1-7 (b)(1), but still am not sure if this is only applicable to radial nozzles.
Thanks

Jakov11000,

I believe rules in 1-7 are not applicable to non-radial nozzles and this is clearly menteioned in the Code.

jakov,

Appendix 1-7 can be used for non-radial openings.

[bold]Interpretation: VIII-1-01-32
Subject: Section VIII, Division 1 (1998 Edition, 1999 Addenda); UG-36(b)(1) and Appendices 1, 1-7, and L, L-7.7
Date Issued: March 9, 2001
File: BC01-079

Question: A “hill-side” nozzle similar to the one described in Example 7 of L-7.7 in Appendix L of Section VIII, Division I is being designed. The nozzle being designed has a major diameter of the opening that exceeds the limitation given in UG-36(b)(1). Does Appendix 1, 1-7 apply to such “hillside” nozzles?

Reply: Yes. The requirements of 1-7(a) and 1-7(c) apply.[/bold]

Hi doct9960.
Thanks for presenting the interpretation..
However, please consider that the interpretation also clearly mentions that the rules of 1-7 (a) & 1-7 (c) can be applied for hill side nozzles. But it does not mention so for 1-7 (b).
1-7 (b) provides rules for calculating membrane and bending stresses for nozzles which exceed the limitations of UG-36 (b) (1) and also for the cases where Nozzle dia is > 40” , is >3.4sqrt RT, Vessel dia is > 60” and Rn / R < 0.7.
But the limitation for application for 1-7 (b) rules is that it cannot be applied to non-radial nozzles and it also cannot be applied for nozzles that have internal projections and that have stresses resulting from external mechanical loads acting on the nozzle.
In short, Rules of app. 1-7 can be applied for hill side nozzles, except for the calculation rules specified in 1-7 (b).

Regards,
