What is the correct way for leak test the valves? Is it wrong using kerosene or diesel?

On smaller recips I would set them so that I could fill them with solvent and see how fast it ran out. If I had lapped the seats properly I could get virtually zero leakage. Other times it ran out very quickly, so I knew I had to send them back to the lapping table. Reed and feather valves may not reliably seal without air pressure, so this test might not be suitable for them.
