I am trying to research the bottom flange widths for a 68DLH steel joist and a 28LH steel joist but I cannot seem to find any definite dimensions anywhere online. I have gotten estimates from ChatGPT but it is giving me a range rather than a solid dimension. Any ideas?

Every joist is designed and manufactured by the company hired for the work. Each company will have different material preferences, and the answer may depend on what materials they have available in the warehouse that day. The only way to get a definite answer is to field measure your steel.

See Designing With Vilcraft by James Fisher. Not directly applicable, but there is some information in the publication on estimating chord widths for joist girders that may be able to be applied to the LH series joists you mentioned to get a ballpark width. There may be some similar methods to directly estimate chord widths for joists, but I would have to do a bit more digging to come up with a reference.

Otherwise, you might try reaching out to a joist supplier. I have a good relationship with engineers at a local joist manufacturer that I can run a question or 2 by every once in a while.

God help us. Chat GPT.

Contact either SJI or an actual joist manufacture, not some idiot program that's been fed 10,000 books that aren't in the public domain that aren't about enigneering. FFS.
