Hello,

I am looking for some guidance on lift lug design, in relation to stresses at the parent component to which the lift lug is welded. I think I have a fair idea in sizing lift lugs and lift lug attachment welds. Appreciate any input towards this. I have already looked at ASME - BTH and David Riker's paper on this. Thanks,

If welding to flexible parts of members such as an I beam then I will use a stiff support width of 2.5 times the thickness of the flange to either side of the web.

Then design the weld for this width only even though you continue it across the full width of the lug.

AISC have a black connections book which goes into this method for bracing connections.
