Are there any rules of thumb concerning solid content and line velocities.

For example if I have 5 wt% of sand in water, how do I keep it from sedimentating my lines...?

I think I have a pretty good calculation methodology that you could use, and a rather rudimentary spreadsheet that I developed months ago.

If you want, I can attach a PDF of the calculations involved, but I need to strip out specific references in the title blocks.

The spreadshee is not in a state of complete development and is a bit convoluted, but it is spawned from the formulae developed in the calculations.

Let me know...otherwise refer to GPSA Section 7 Pages 1-4 and turn the theory "sideways"; there is also a book by Govier, Aziz et al called "The Flow Of Complex Mixtures In Pipes" that makes some good attempts at predicting solids transport behaviour.

Typing "settling velocity of solids" into google resulted in some interesting data - suggest you do the same.

Snorgy:

That would be very helpful. I am also trying to get the Govier book you mention, however it will be shipped and take a couple of weeks to arrive

Enkelaar:

I attach a PDF here. I hope you can find it within yourself to forgive the convoluted way in which I formulate rationale and derivations.

The typed output is actually the output from the spreadsheet I developed. I'll attach a version of that later if you find it of value.

Of course with 5% sand there will also be some derating of the pumps performance in terms of flow, head, power input etc.
