Load Combo for Wind Load on a Sign

Hello,

I am using ASCE 7-10 and I have calculated the "design wind force" on a sign according to equation 29.4-1 (F = qhGCfAs). I came up with F = 2.1 kips. Do I treat "F" as "W" in the load combinations listed in Chapter 2 of ASCE 7-10?

I am ultimately trying to design the foundation for the sign and need to know what load combination I should be using to check overturning and soil bearing.

Yes. The likely controlling load combination is 0.9D+1.0W (LRFD) or 0.6D+0.6W (ASD). You may need to include ice loads, depending on the location of the sign. The load combinations get modified a bit, per Chapter 2, if you include atmospheric ice.
 
Yes, F is the total force due to wind and would be the W in the load combination. Are you working for the EOR or the sign company?
 
You just have to run it through the applicable combinations and see which controls. A lot of times (for something like a sign, pole, tower, etc), the combo that includes (both) Ice & Wind controls. (Depends on location however.)

 
Thank you all for the quick responses. @ phamENG, I am working for the EOR. @ Hokie and Warose, I will need to include ice conditions for my area and I'm glad you reminded me to check that.

May I ask why you're using ASCE 7-10 and not AASHTO LRFD "Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires, and Traffic Signals"?
AASHTO Chapter 3 spells out all the load combinations and what should be considered, ice, wind, DL, etc...
 
The approach is the AASHTO document and ASCE7 are similar. The AASHTO sign document is worth looking into even if you are planning on using ASCE7. The simplified gust effect factor presented in AASHTO should save you considerable time over trying to calculate it per ASCE7 for a flexible structure..
 
Soil bearing is quite likely specified on an ASD basis.
