Looking for a Cable Sizing software

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for a Cable Sizing software for MV and LV plants, which has at least the following features:

-> Must have a manageable load list as input (maybe using an excel file);

-> Support more international standards (like IEC, NEC, etc) and not only one specific (I've found lots of good programs but they support only British Stds);

-> Has to evaluate the ampacity of the cables and have a design based on voltage drop and passing through energy;

-> *Should* be a little more calculation-oriented than graphical;

-> Presence of manageable internal cable library;

-> Reports of the sizings done (stds used, cable list, materials, etc).

The only softwares I've found right now are Aveva Electrical and Ampére Electrical, which looks like they have most things I need, but I would like to evaluate more options.

I'm not sure I see how this would work. I get a lot aircraft electrical wire selection/replacement/substitution questions. In my experience the environment electrical wire has to function in cannot be ignored. That is temperature, chemical compatibility, durability, shielding requirements etc. When considering current carrying capacity, that's part of staying within a thermal budget. The environment has a temperature range, how the wiring is run affects heat dissipation, the wire has a temp design limit based on insulation and metals the wire is constructed from. I don't know your specific application but I don't see how an application like that would work out in an aviation environment.

@kontiki99 What you describe seems amenable to automation as a series of derating factors, not unlike the way MIL-HDBK-217 handles temperature, vibration, etc., on the reliability of components.

For electrical wire size there are formulas and tables in FAA AC 43.13-1B CH 11 (from memory). It is a repair guide not really a design guide. The data and tables are set up for voltage drop and ampacity in bundles and conduit. That tables are similar to those in SAE AS50881.

That data is tailored for aircraft. Doing everything the way it's done in aviation will probably add a lot of selection criteria not mentioned in the OP. It may not matter.

In my experience, it is difficult to get an integrated program for all kind of routing-ampacity for free air, underground[buried and in duct bank],cable tray and other, voltage drop in different connections, short-circuit calculations and so on.
I have a lot of Visual Basic different programs, for instance : one for underground ductbank, one for simple buried, another for cable in air-in conduit or free and touched or not, in cable trays and other.
The cable -single or multicore-data I built it using IEC 60228, IEC 60502-1 and 2 or ASTM B8-86, UL 1581 and other and the calculation according to IEC 60287-1-1,and 2-1, or IEEE 835/1994 [and Neher and McGrath ].
The short-circuit program according to IEC 60909-0 [ or IEC 61363] or IEEE 551. Voltage drop according to IEEE 141 [3.11 Calculation of voltage drops].
For cable tray ampacity I followed J.Stolpe theory [ANSI/NEMA WC 51 ICEA P-44-440]
All these programs I did at the time as I need it so that took 10 years, approximately.
