About a year ago, there was a post titled 'Build your own workstation for $1000', or something to that effect. It included a list of components, but I'll be darned if I can find it now. Do old posts get flushed after a certain period of time?

They go way back to 2001, but I'm not sure where the search function might end. (I probably had something to do with that thread--at least I think I'd have commented on it.)

In early 2003, I got a quote from Xi Computer using AMD's then-new 64-bit Opteron chip. (This was back in the era when foolish Intel said there was really no reason them to create a 64-bit chip.) I took the quote from Xi with all the hardware listed and priced it out at Fry's Electronics to see if I could casually build such a system myself. It turned out to be just a tad more expensive from Xi (like $100 or so), so I bought the system from Xi and saved myself some time in returning components that I either mis-bought or that didn't work (Fry's is somewhat notorious for this hassle). Glad I did.

If you don't find that thread, I'm sure people here can point out some bargains in building your own system. The graphics card will be your biggest problem in keeping cost down, since the chip wars are now in full swing and a great deal again.

If it's a year old post it is probably close to obsolete. Intel Core 2 Duo (or Xeon derivatives) are really what people are getting these days since they've been out performing AMD a fair bit and don't cost that much. Although at this point SW still isn't much of a multi-core program (apparently for rendering and FEA it is).

Reality is that the graphics card will cost as much or more than the rest of the system, unless you get a low end one.
