Hi,

Is there any guidelines for installing copper tape (of lightening protection system) within reinforced concrete? I noticed that a copper tape runs in concrete slab just rest on the rebar net. Is it OK? Isn't there any risk of affecting inhabitants during lightening?

Thanks.

Do not bury a lightning protection system within a concrete slab. When you get a strike it will likely blow chunks out of the concrete. Isolate it and pass it through the concrete to ground.

Copper will also corrode in concrete and don't let it contact the rebar...more corrosion of both.

Thanks Ron,

Any technical guidelines please....

Usually in this part of the world if its required in the foundations a dedicated loop of reinforcement welded together for continuity is provided. This loop is just tied to normal reinforcement and attached to copper outside of the foundation. Interested in any technical Guidance as well to backup what Ron has noted?

The only place I've seen copper loop through foundations is in actual electrical substations I've been involved in. But that was more to do with earthing everything via an earth loop vs lightening protection as far as I remember.

As long as its earthed I don't believe there is any risk to occupants, that's the point of having/requiring the protection.
