Manufacturing: newbie question

We just bought manufacturing license for one working place.
Of course we had kind of training courses, but few things are not clear for me . Look at the attached picture. I need to design simple area mill operation. everything is quite clear, only one thing: the tool does not touch pockets wall but moves over it. which is the best way to define edges (or walls), where tool will only touch it?
I looked over docs and CAST, but it seems impossible to find such simple examples :(

The short answer based on your picture should be to just edit the single boundary on the edge you wish to be tangent to as: Tangent to instead of "On" (which it appears to be).

yes, I know this option, but it does not work with planar_mill. It works with mill_area, but in mill_area stock material is not associative to the model. in planar_mill you define blank's material top plane and floor plane.
 
The "Tanto" and "On" options work on Planar mill.

-Open up your operation
-click the "boundry" button
-click "Edit"
-click "custom member data"
-using the left and right arrow buttons at the bottom of the window, you scroll thru the different members of the chain and you can alter any of those options you see.

Also, remember you do NOT need to set up blank data. I NEVER, EVER, EVER set up blank data. Not ever.
You can make your boundry using a combination of entities from the part model and the blank model. Be creative with your boundries!

For more control, avoid using the "ON" option in your boundries... To get the same effect, use the Stock option and enter a "Negative Stock" value. That way you can control how much the tool overhangs the edge.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Have you tried face milling - pick the wall as a wall, and then simplify shape to get the path to extend out?

To Jaydenn: should boundries be open or closed? because in some cases works only open areas, and in some cases only closed. in my example only works opened boundry. and opened is right side of the part. also i tried not to enter blank data at all and it worked ok....

To markrief: yes, it works with face milling, but the cut height is not associatea to the part and also material must be removed in severel steps. it is not ok for us.

so lets go make experiments. i believe it is not the last post about manufacturing in NX :)

Open and closed will work. Depends on the output you desire.

I will include a simple example NX6 part for you to look at.

In this example, the boundry is closed and I have different stock applied to some of the boundry entities.

To see what I have done, open the operation, click the "specify part boundries" button, click "edit".

Now, use the left and right arrows to scroll thru the different entities. You can apply different values to individual lines.

Works great.

Thanks for the answer very much. But i modified your example. just made chamfer on one of the corner. after redefining boundry it gives me this error (see attached image).
but your example is very useful. but it is possible to uncheck stock value and make all boundaries with option "on" (except inside side) and it worked great for me.

Ahhhh... The trick was the material side :)
Thanks again for the great and simple example. it realy works great in any case.
It is strange, why this situation was not mentioned in our courses... :(
