Which software package is better suited to engineering design, MathCAD or Mathematica. Mathematica is significantly more expensive and I was wondering whether it was worth it?

Mathematica's forte is symbolic math and high-precision numerical calculations.

CalculationCenter is a scaled down and lower cost version of Mathematica.

Mathcad is currently pushing the concept of provenance and calculation management through the use of XML as the native format. This allows you to embed source information for numbers and equations used in calculations and track the history of the usage through transfers into other documents.

Sorry I would use TK Solver 5 over either of the above program. It gets you an answer faster( Less steps) and now it documents to. Oh and it's even cheaper You can try it for free.
