I am interested in bsfc and bsac data for the 3 cylinder 799 cc diesel engine that Mercedes employs in the Smart Car. I think the engine is a 65.5 bore x 79 stroke 3 cylinder, but I don't know the Daimler Benz engine code (which I also would like to know if anyone knows it).

I think the current rating is 110 Nm at 2500 rpm and 33 kW at 4200 rpm. If you have bsfc for any other rating, please specify the rating.

Thanks very much for any help. I have searched the web, and found nothing regarding engine specific fuel consumption.

My son had a Smart in Europe for a while. We are starting to see them on a regular basis here in Socal. I like them...perhaps I might even get one for a spare. ;-)

From what I am told and from the published fuel "savings" in your link, I would hardly opt for either version of a Smart hybrid as a fuel savings venture...I'm fairly certain the additional costs involved would make this more of a "feel good" move.

Rod,

Thanks for your comments. Also, please keep me in mind if you do come across any published data.

From what I heard about the experience of a few people I know, they aren't any more economical than a VW TDI. At least, in a TDI you get comfort and nice torque with the diesel smell and fume.

I looked, but couldn't find any data, either published or confidential. You may need to buy one and stick it on your dyno.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for your comments. I thought that there might be some NGC engineers out there who could provide some data. (I think NGC used the MB SmartCar diesel engine to replace the Moto-Guzzi engine in the Hunter UAV - see link.)

Thanks,

Dick
